Marriage bound families together adn they would pull together in hard times. Now we have nuclear families and families don't appear to pull together like they used to.
In the past these marriage bonds created my alliances between other families. Now we try to be self sufficent and don't need our own families needless to say someone else's.
Marriage does not protect a family.
Marriage has fallen to a breach of contract status. If it doesn't work I get half of the debt and wealth.
So what is the point to marraige? And is it out dated?

I believe Racer X & Seti gave the best answers. The role of marriage may have changed/evolved over the years, but it is still the best thing going.
As for the more simple minded responses that lack depth, insight or the ability to see outside of the box, WOW! "I may not agree with what you say, but I'll fight to the death for your right to say it" -Voltair

Whether it's "outdated" or not, I don't see any "better" alternative around at the moment. Marriage is still a social norm, and a contract that helps regulate transactions between two adults in a certain type of partnership. Which is not to say that one doesn't have a choice - no one is "required" to get married. But if one wishes to send a message to the society loud and clear regarding the status of the partnership they're entering, and to get certain "legal" structure into place that would help this partnership run smoother - there's no alternative other than marriage.

Marriage has not changed, its people that have changed.
No one wants to stick out the bad times or care for someone else more than themselves anymore. When you love someone you want to make that person a part of your life forever, hence, marriage.
Its in the maintainance that we fall short. Love is not about you. Its about the person you love. You try to make them happy and if they love you they should do the same.
The world has gotten selfish. Its all about me , thats the in thing. Thats why you have to ask that question.
Think if every person who finds someone nice or normal, (I mean no one is perfect) that they 'feel' for or is in love with, would decide to make that person happy by making that commitment to be there for each other and then make it happen and stick to it, how much simpler life would be. Think about it.

marriage is needed now more than ever so the family has a stable point of reference. If we just abandon our lives to doing what we want and not protecting our families then we are less than civilized and putting the burden of our children on the good will of the community and not taking care of them ourselves. this doesnt workout well for anyone, least of all the children

The point of marriage is for two people who truly love and care for each other that wants to spend the rest of their lives together. Marriage does not mean what it use too. The world has become a nasty and greedy place to live.

I don't think marriage is an outdated idea, I just think marriage is evolving and the concept of marriage as it was defined even just 100 years ago no longer valid or relevent to today's society.

I think people who believe marriage is outdated are those who have never truly fallen in love and out of miserable desperation, make up crap in order to full fufillment in their own lives.

It's as outdated as gingham aprons, LPs, and smallpox. Women and men no longer need each other for ANYTHING, so what's the point? It's a waste of time, money, and effort.

No. If marriage were out dated then gay and lesbian people would not keep trying to get married.
Marriage is a legal thing it is not really a romantic thing.

No, it's the lack of ppl who understand what marriage is and what it means. They rather just give up than work on it.
