RAKSHASA
Hindu mythology:
The Ramayana describes them as being created from Brahma's foot; elsewhere, they are descended from Pulastya, or from Khasa, or from Nirriti and Nirrita. Many Rakshasa were particularly wicked humans in previous incarnations. Rakshasas are notorious for disturbing sacrifices, desecrating graves, harassing priests, possessing human beings, and so on. Their fingernails are poisonous, and they feed on human flesh and spoiled food.
They are shapechangers and magicians, and often appear in the forms of humans, dogs, and large birds. Hanuman, during a visit to the rakshasas' home in Lanka, observed that the demons could come in any form imaginable.
A closer look at a rakshasa reveals that the palms of its hands are where the backs of the hands would be on a human.
Legend has it that a traveller and his companions once encountered an entire village of rakshasas whom all pretended to be a hospitable people during the day but when evening came 'round detached their heads from their bodies and flew around masticating the man's entire party unto their doom. He barely escaped with his life, and not without a few bites.
Days later his bites became infected, swarming with maggots and dripping green ichor; and in less than a week he began craving dacayed flesh. After a brief period of seeking out carrion and human corpses being prepped for burial, the man decided to behead himself with a makeshift guillotine. To the horror of his family and friends, whom had been given the full detail of his sorrowful journey home, the story goes that when the magistrate came to view the body and pronounce him dead, his decapitated head had disappeared, leaving a diminishing trail of blood behind it. It was presumed that his reanimated head had returned to the village of rakshasas that infected him.
This legend predates that of the modern vampire by about fifty-three centuries.
