If you mean controversy about the actual election ---

The election of 1876, which was decided by one electoral vote after a 15-person panel decided by one vote to award electoral votes to Rutherford Hayes.

The election of 1824, when Andrew Jackson actually received a majority of the popular vote, but John Quincy Adams was selected by the House of Representatives.

And of course, the presidential elections of 2000 and 2004 each had a fair amount of controversy surrounding them.

most every pre & post war campaign since the start of this country involved major debates, then you have the womens right issues, civil rights issues, prohibition, reconstruction of the southern states issues, before that the States rights vs Federal rights issues that lead up to the civil war. The civil war was only a small part about slavery and much more about states rights issues.
