I got into an argument with a friend of mine who I haven't known for too long, actually he is more of a mutual friend of a good friend of mine. I was pissed because he has a tendency to contradict me in anything that I say. I finally got sick of it and told him something to the effect that it was annoying that he reacted to everything that I say with some obnoxious contradiction, that he was reacting this way because he was intimidated by me, and that he was acting like a lost little boy wihout a "daddy" to teach him real confidence. Well I didn't know this guy's dad died when he was twelve, until he responded by saying, "my dad died when I was twelve!" He was really pissed and insulted. I feel real guilty, but I really had no clue about his guy and his dad. If I would have known I would have left the last part out, I was intending to say that he needed to grow up. So how bad is this?

I think he's telling you about his fathers death is his way of making you feel bad. Nobody is happy that his father passed away but after you called him a "little boy" and brought his father into the picture...I'd be defensive as well! Next time...stop the question at "Why do you contradict everything I say?" and let him respond without having to resort to the initial slam you gave him!

That is not beyond fixing but you need to do it fast. It's always the right thing to share with someone how they make you feel but always be sure to do it in a way you won't end up regretting. If you end up hurting them...two wrongs don't make a right. Make sure you don't say or do anything you would need to apologize for. Tell him you're sorry for being so insensitive and really be genuine about it. Tell him you still feel annoyed about how he treats you but you are sorry for hurting him. Hope this helps! :) Good luck!

You have the right to say what you want, how he reacts is his problem. but you were right about the dad thing, you might apologies, but do not back track on his obnoxious behaviour, he needs to know or he will never learn to change

Actually I don't see a whole lot wrong with what you said. Of course you can easily say to him now that you did not realize his dad was no longer with us and that your are sorry for saying that but you still think what he is doing to you is wrong.

This is not so bad if he was not saying smart things to you, you would not of said that right? But you could be nice and say sorry to him. To make him and yourself fell better.

You didn't know. Next time attack the problem not the person. Meaning, dont get personal. Say your peice and be done.

Ouch...pretty bad, but he did ask for it.
If you choose, you can be the bigger person and apologize for that specific comment, but tell him you meant everything else.
