As oestrogen levels change before your period, levels of serotonin alter also. The body is sensitive to these changes and will try to regulate them. One of the quickest ways to increase serotonin production is to eat food containing carbohydrates. However, most of us favour refined carbs such as, biscuits, cakes and white bread. The sugars within these foods are digested rapidly, hence blood glucose levels rise quickly, which in turn results in excessive food intake.
Another reason that we crave chocolate is because it contains tryptophan which elevates mood, and magnesium which is important for muscle cramps.

All the carbohydrates help balance the hormonal system. So it's not just crap food, but also bread, pasta, rice etc. Chocolate affects the endorphine levels, so it helps with the mood swings. Sorry, I've read this in a medical mag, but this was all I could remember...

With my first, I craved especially spiced stuff and Taco Bell. With my second it replaced into all fruit and stuff like that. With this one, i have not extremely gotten any cravens yet lol. Oh wait i needed a hotdog with the works very last week. the exhilaration of being pregnant :) My hubby did not extremely crave something out of the conventional lol.

When you're on your period you have a slightly higher calorie need so you do need more food. Not sure why you crave naughty stuff though?!

You do require more calories during your period- I think it's like 200 a day- not really enough, though, to justify a big chocolate binge!
