First put an ice pack on it, this will keep the swelling down. If you insist on skating wrap it tight but, you could compound an injury so, I wouldn't. Go see an ER and have an X-Ray, see if there's any permanent damage then follow the doctors directions.

It depends on how bad the sprain is and if there was any tendon damage. It is best to stay off of it when possible and put ice on it, if you don't have a ice bag a bag of frozen peas will work. It takes a sprain several weeks to start mending, I sprained my ankle in August and it still swells even tho the pain is gone.

You actually need to ice it down to relieve the swelling and pressure. Also elevate it as much as possible. You want to keep the blood away from that area so the swelling will reduce faster. Stay off of it for at least a week, if you can help it, to let the ligaments heal if they've torn. It usually takes 2-4 weeks to completely heal depending on how severe the sprain.

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.
So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.
Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.
A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.
Heal your ankle fully & fast?

You should rest it for a few days, put an ice pack on your ankle several times a day for 15 - 20 mins and support it with a bandage.
Hope you are back on your skates soon

Ice and rest. Once its starts feeling a little better, you need to regain your range of motion by doing excercises. One thing you can do is sit on a chair and hold your leg out in front of you, then trace the alphabet with your bad ankle. Compare it to the healthy ankle to see the difference in the range of motion.

are you sure it's sprained and not strained? if it's sprained stay off it as much as possible, ice it for the first 48 hours after the injury then heat anytime after that and elevate it above your heart, lay on the floor and put your foot on the couch. Until swelling and bruising go down.
If it's strained, then ice it and stay off of it the first day or so...go and get it xrayed
