Both the a guitar and bass guitar are stringed and similar instruments. The only difference is that the bass is tuned an octave lower than a guitar. In rock and pop music the guitar can be used to play melodies as the main instrument or chords to accompany the rest of the music. The bass plays a more rhythmic role it takes care of the bass line, along with the drums it may sometimes have a nice polyrhythmic effect, try listening to It´s my life by no doubt.

If you are speaking of electric guitars and electric basses, there are several differences. Both are guitars, although a bass guitar is usually just called a bass. A standard guitar has six strings and tuned higher than a bass. A guitar can be played as a solo instrument, and it can either be strummed or played with single note melodies. The bass sounds much lower, and is almost never played as a solo instrument, although
bassists sometime play solos in a band performance. The bass is not strummed but is played by plucking individual strings. The standard bass has four strings, but today people play 5 string basses as well. Before the advent of the electric bass, the upright bass was used. Today, some orchestras and bluegrass bands use the upright bass.

Bass guitars have 4 strings (instead of a normal guitar's six) and the E string (the lowest string) is an octave lower than the E string on a guitar - this results in the strings being much thicker than guitar strings. Bass guitars also tend to be a bit bigger than normal guitars - the necks are longer as the strings need to be longer to make the sound deeper.

A standard guitar has six strings, and a standard bass guitar has four. The strings on a guitar are, from top to bottom, E-A-D-G-B-E. The bass has the same top 4 strings (E-A-D-G-B), only they are two octaves lower (hence the term bass). Guitar notes are mostly in the treble cleff, while bass notes are in the bass cleff. Bass strings are thicker than guitar strings, and the neck is longer on a bass than on a guitar.

Regular guitar has 6 strings, but the bass guitar only has 4 strings. They also cover different ranges of octaves. Bass are lower tones and the guitar has the mid-high range tones.

Basically, a guitar has 6 lighter-weight strings, while a bass has 4 heavier strings. The bass is used to create a background rythym, along with percussion, while the guitar is used for the actual melody.
