ABSOLTUELY no malachite green products! The chemicals itself is extremely harmful to your tetras and will only make conditions worst in your tank since ich can tolerate or be immune to the effects of the chemical. A little known fact about the chemical is that it fails to treat ich that has already bred or upon the fish. Don't risk it!
Keep in mind the only fish that get ich are stressed fish so improving conditions in your tank well help hault the progress of the parasite.
I. Increase the temperature of the aquarium to about 80-85 F. This will speed up the life cycle of parasite so that it'll become more valunerable to medicine.
II. Treat the aquarium with aquarium/conditioning salts. The salts will improve the immune system of the fish and prevent emerging ich parasites from digging into the fish's body. If the parasites cannot find a host to dig into then they'll die from starvation. If you want to you can use ich medicine that doesn't contain malachite green but this is optional.
III. Begin gravel vacuuming and remove 25% of the tank's water daily. This will suck up free-swimming parasites and also their eggs that have been deposited in the gravel.
IV. Do this for about two weeks. It takes ich, in warmer temperatures, seven days to complete their lifecycle. The second week will be used to pick up any other parasites that might have been left behind.

hi, they can get this by stress and he can be stress about a few tings, temp of water, tranportation (from one place to another when u got him),water typ my be different, and so on..
you can go to a pet store near u and get stuff to help there is all kinda stuff there are about 20 brands or so.lol.. yes alot to pick from..We would always use rid ick at petco(i worked there for 3 years) and Primafix They work the best that i seen..
*But another thing u should do is check everything in your tank..
--make sure there and no other fish that m,ight be in ther stressing him out(fish that are fighting with him)
--The Temp, of the water
--get your water tested,(to make sure the ph, and all is good)
(if u treat your fish he might noyt get better if u do not check everything eles to make sure everything is ok in the tank)
othere thing u can do befor u start adding things to your tank is first test your water (petso does it for free) and see where u are at on that and iff something is off it is always best to do a water change only 15% that why is will help fix what is wrong in there..
U can also get q care sheet at petco if on is near you..
good luck~
p.s befor buying a porduct to add to the water make sure u read it all the way to make sure it will not harm the fish u have (some are no good if u have frogs, snails, and things like that)
Source(s):
www.petco.com <~ u can look for things u need and call petstores near u if they have the product..

i had the same problem with my tank. i lost ALL of my fish, i had to start all over again. i didnt know that there was a liquid that u can put in ur tank look for it @ a pet store. i hope that works, good luck! Also what u should is not stress the fish, and all the fish that do have ick, bring them to another tank that has been running for several days(hospital tank), so they wont contaminate the others. Rinse with HOT HOT HOT water all your rocks and decorations. that should do the trick.
again GOOD LUCK!

Malachite green is a good ich medication. Whatever medication you choose, just read on the label if it is for external parasites. BE SURE to take any carbon out of your filters, because carbon will just "take out" the medication, as it is it's function, to remove chemicals from your water. Be sure and treat for the recommended amout of time. You may need to retreat. You can also add some freshwater aquarium salt to your tank, if you haven't already. "saltwater dips" are also an option for your infected fish. If you would like more info on this, please email me. :-)
