I've got weak knees and I've been told not to jog anymore. However, I'd still like to keep fit. I've been swimming regularly. Just wondering if swimming still places pressure on the knees? Because when u're underwater, each time you "kick", aren't you also placing pressure on the knees?

There is very small amount of pressure on the knees but not anything compared to running or walking. If you are doing the crawl you should be fine. The frog kick (usually done in breast stroke) may place more pressure on the ligaments on the inside and outside of the knee, but no real pressure on the inside of the joint. Keep swimming. If your knees really start to hurt. Stop and try something different. You can swim without kicking, of course its slower, but it can be done.

No, this will not cause pressure on your knees. Most therapists recommend swimming to relieve the pressure on certain body parts. Swimming is a good overall workout, not just physically, but cardiovascular as well.

Stephanie, water aerobics or swimming is very good exercises, ask your instructor if there is anything you should avoid doing because of your knees. The other option is to use a bike, regular if you ride one, or stationary bike, there is also a recumbent bike that is excellent for people with problems with the knees or after knee surgeries. Keep on exercising

Theres pressure on your body no matter what you do, but swimming is used for therapy after knee injuries because it doesnt put very much pressure on your knees. It is the perfect way to stay for those who have knee/leg injuries.
