I work at dennys im a hostess and i put a small sign just reminding people to vote and also telling people not to forget to vote and my boss said i couldnt do that cause it was soliciting but i thought that it was a duty as U.S citizens to vote so how is that soliciting?

Your workplace isn't doubling as a Polling place is it? There are rules if you are AT a polling place, but otherwise, it's usually okay.

You are allowed, legally, to encourage people to vote - and frankly I think it's great you are! Especially if you aren't pushing in a particular direction.

Having said that, your boss can still require you to remove the sign - they can have more restrictive policies. (Maybe you can compromise and wear a button?)

I would think as long as you are not supporting any particular candidate or issue that it would not be considered soliciting. I could understand his point if you were to put up a sign in the lobby that said "Vote for Smith!". I agree with you that this is appropriate.

that's not soliciting, you are gaining nothing by placing the sign. As long as you are not promoting a candidate or issue, you are doing nothing illegal. BUT your employer can nix the idea cuz it is his place of business....you can always smile at your customers as they leave and verbally remind them to vote!
