Is there anything he should be doing now for financial aid? Any websites you can suggest to help him figure out a narrower field? Should he even try to narrow it down yet? Any good schools for this major?

It's never to early to think about financial aid. So get good grades and apply for anything and everything he can find. As far as narrowing his field, I would suggest to stay open, specialization isn't necessary at this point. Schools is a hard one as there are a lot of factors, cost, distance from home, quality of study etc. It is all about balance. Video game design is all about programming and visual arts, so a school that offers both is a good choice. Stick with the strong schools for programming though. This will be under Computer Engineering or Software Engineering. SO a good Engineering School is what you are looking for.

Dissuade him, unless he's planning to be an entrepreneur and start his own company. There are a limited number of positions in this industry, and they're filled. Also, you've heard about "EA Widow" or "EA Spouse" who complained that she never ever got to see her fiance because he was working all the time. If I had to do it all over again, I would not have been a computer game programmer. I'd be a high school algebra teacher.

Please, stay away from for-profit trade schools that advertise on daytime TV. Multimedia is the term for where they study video and programming.

Multimedia is a specific course of study at Arizona State, in Tempe that I'm aware of. I know there should be others out there.
