Anybody know if there's any rhyme or reason to the order in which the players' names appear in a box score? Pretend it reads "Barbosa 2-4 2-2 7, Nash 10-20 6-6 26, Marion 10-18 3-4 16..." I know what the numbers mean, but don't know if there's a reason they appear in a particular order.

I know they're not alphabetical. I know they're not in order of most points scored. I've always kinda guessed that it meant the order in which the players scored: Leandro scored, then Nash, then maybe Leandro, then Marion, etc., but don't know. Can I read into that that Leandro probably started?

Any ideas?

First 5 are the starters. Rest in order of appearance.
2-4 means you sank 2 out of 4 from the field
2-2 means you sank 2 out of 2 free throws
7 means you scored a total of 7 points

I don't know about the pros, but usually in college and high school basketball, players are listed NUMERICALLY in the score book. And that IS a rule here in Virginia. So the chances are you are seeing just how the reporters see the different scores. And, if you will look closely, you will see that reporters are not separating 2-point field goals from "treys" any more. I have been told that that is being done to save space but sometimes, it's very confusing.

first you must know what the abreviations for field goals, foul shots, three point shots are . Then you can read the box scores for the nba. For example barbosa-he went two for four in field goals, which one of the field goals was a three point try, then he went two for two at the charity stripe which gives him the total of seven points. they appear in that order so you can come to the final totals

It is the order in which they are checked in to the game. Even the starters are technically checked in, so the first five depend on how the coach lays out the line-up, and from there on, it is who checked in the game next.
