Because there arent enough well paid ones to go round?

So why do Americans and right wingers persistently claim that if you "get educated and work hard" you'll be fine financially? Try telling that to the 1000s of skilled people and graduates working in call centres, resturants and MaccyD's in the UK! Beleive me none of them want to be there. And yes there are some great jobs out there - but NOT ENOUGH TO GO ROUND!!

Set up your own business? Yeah and for every "self made millionaire" how many self-employed end up bankrupt and destitute?

Or the qualified plumbers who can't get work because Polish plumbers are cheaper. Or the trained mechanic who can't get work because Polish mechs are cheaper?

As for "everyone in America works for what they have" oh yeah. What about Paris Hilton and her mates - what did she ever do to earn her fortune other than squeeze herself out of Mrs Hilton's vagina?

You people need a dose of reality!

J S - I'm British I know nothing about "Kerry" or your other politicians. I have enough trouble getting my head round that **** Tony Blair.

Nunya B - I graduated from Uni in 2001 and still haven't found a high paid job - I've worked in pubs, resturants and call centres and we are currently so poor we nearly got our house repossessed this year. So please don't tell me about "reality" or "wanting it all at once." you're the ignorant one who knows nothing of the misery some people in this country suffer. Go and buy some more designer shoes with your nice "big salary".

kathy is a nurse

I'm not even going to try and reason with your statements, and as for me "coming off to employers the way I do here" that is the biggest load of rubbish I have ever heard in my life- do you act the same in interviews as you do on an internet message board!!? Does anyone. Err - NO! That really is a laughable statement to make. Thanks for giving me a chuckle.

I'm not "blaming" America just pointing out the way things really are for some of the people in this world - I'm sure its the same over there too. Sadly some of you seem too blind to see it.

My older brother, but that is because this country right now, is not going with his major, he might have to move to Europe, for his degree, but he is going to grad. school, so who knows?

I agree - it is definately not the case that working hard and getting a good degree gets you anywhere in the UK for certain. This Labour government is a complete disaster for large numbers of people. They don't want to give out work to those that deserve it they want to provide jobs for their thick pals.

Blair is all hot air - you can't believe a word he says and Brown is just as bad. I agree with you wholeheartedly!!!

That idiotic cult of everyone going to university has flooded the market with people with degrees, a number of whom are dim witted *****. A lot of the older professionals worked their way up and really learned, but there were also many many unskilled workers on the other side as well.

I'am a Machinist,CNC Programmer, but because of Rhem. Arthritis, I work part time as a Janitor. I depend on Veterans healthcare. But the cuts made by Bush, I can only see my Doctor once a year. I go to another Doctor for predisone, but its killing me slowly. I can't get my social security, that Bush says is my money. He is using it to buy new Iraq police cars, and give the people free medical care.

You can't find a job in Britain and you are blaming America?? Sorry, don't get the logic there. Maybe you need to take a closer look at your economy, not us. And honestly, maybe your attitude is at least partially to blame. If you come across to potential employers like you do here, maybe you are turning them off.

The potential to be comfortable...and maybe even rich...is greater for the masses here than any other country. Sure, we have a few born with silver spoons in their mouths...hey, they got the luck of the draw. But that sure doesn't stop anyone else who wants a piece of the American dream to go out and get it.

In the last 16 years, I have worked as: 1. A "Demo" lady (the one who hands out samples at your local supermarket 2. A pizza cook 3. Census "taker" ... and the BULK of the time as ... 4. A HOUSE CLEANER! I just LOVE passing my days by counting how many TOILETS I have cleaned!! My B.A. in Sociology has not done SQUAT for me. I have worked for insurance companies, software companies, and brokerages... NONE of which required my BA. As for this being "common" in my area, of COURSE it is! The main business/industries/economy in this area of the country are: 1. Tourism 2. Farming Now, tell me how college helps in being a dishwasher or harvesting barley? “POLITICAL CORRECTNESS is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the CLEAN END.” --- Former US Senator from Wyoming, Alan K. Have you seen exactly what the military is paid???? Jesus, I assume you are still talking about Kerry dumb *** comment a week ago. But seriously, look at the military, (ALOT of whom are HIGHLY educated) and see how much we actually get paid for what we do. Trust me, we do a little more than you do at an average job, and get seriously underpaid.

No, you need a dose of reality.

Getting a degree does not mean you automatically get a high-paying job. There are still dues to pay, but eventually it will pay off in higher level jobs with larger salaries.

You just have no patience and want it all NOW.

And who said "everyone in America works for what they have"? There are exceptions to every rule, Paris being a prime example.
