I'm an American girl, and being direct is good. It saves your breath and it saves time. It's in our culture to just be blunt. Just say what you gotta say!

Yesterday I was in a pub in South London having a quiet pint with the wife. In walked a couple, sat down and the lady got out here Blackberry. HELLO , She yelled, THIS IS MARGARET FERGUSON I'M IN ENGLAND AND NEED TO CHECK THE TENDER ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE CHEVRON 34B TENDER. The voice was American and it went on in this vein for about ten noisy minutes. She was oblivious to her surroundings and so loud and direct it left everyone else in this quiet pub shaking. Now my rush to judgement was:
(1) She behaved like she did because she was American and unaware that this ain't what you do here.
(2) That she was even noisier, more direct and insensitive because she was a woman.
My prejudice I admit - but the ring of truth?

Which part of the UK do you tend to visit? People in the south, such as London, tend to be less friendly in general than in the North. Also, most Black women in the UK are not British. They have mostly migrated from Africa. They just distrust you because you are a foreigner to them and perhaps they see you as too westernized and/or they could be jealous because you are from a wealthier country than them. For example, some Nigerians would call you or see you as "the white woman", even if you are black because they consider you as being too westernized. I am sorry you are treated that way when you come our country. P.S My African friend got what she perceived to be the "evil eye" (here in the North of England) from another African female. She buys hair from her shop but she can do her own hair. It turned out that that woman thought my friend had become too westernized since her arrival two years ago.

I'm not sure that they are. They have strange words for parts of the anatomy that British women have no fear in naming: "abs", "glutes" (or "cheeks"). They fear confrontation in any form, so woe betide you if you say anything which sounds mildly critical about anyone, even if it's just setting the record straight. No, where did you get this notion?

Thanks to the women`s lib movement we now act like men including the swearing, the drinking, the sleeping around, the fighting, and the bad manners. I do not care how many women give me a thumbs down, you know it is true, and I am a woman.

You clearly haven't met any normal average UK woman. I think Paddy B might have it right.

American women are spoiled rotten. Many have even started to grow balls because it is fashionable to do so.

They are raised is a culture where free speech is paramount. UK women are much more concerned about being prim and proper.
