if you want to protect yourself....here's an easy way. (and if your piece ever gets popular you can publish a book with this stuff in it and sell it to fans. heh)

take polaroids of the process. take one of each step. Have a friend take a picture or two of you working. Then mail them to yourself. Maybe even mail the first one right away to prove the date you started.

This process holds up with literary and conceptual copyright laws...I don't see why it wouldn't for creation of art....considering be it physical or literay...it's all art. :)
