Nazi Germany had the most powerful army in Western Europe - and the most advanced in the world. No country stood a chance - even the vast USSR with it's enormous army had trouble fighting the Germans off. Why else do you think they managed to conquer pretty much the whole continent in a month or so - and most importantly manage to hold onto it for several years. Britain only really stood a chance because of its navy and the English channel making it too much bother for Germany to invade.

People forget all the other European countries that surrendered, Holland, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Poland - none of them put up more than token resistance, because it would have been utterly pointless, they'd have been crushed in a matter of hours.

Because the Germans outnumbered them and had a very powerful war machine. It would have been stupid not to have a certain amount of fear, given the circumstances.

However, the underground French Resistance was very active. People were brave to risk their lives in order to fight back the best way they could.

Now which particular French was that? Was it the free French army that fought alongside the Allies on D-day. Was it the resistance fighters who took on the might of the German war machine armed with hunting rifles and kitchen knives?

I think you've been watching too much Allo Allo.

they weren't. the problem was that their army anticipated that the germans would come in from austria so concerntrated their forces there... so when the germans came via holland and belgium it was a bit of a surprise.
the french couldn't mobilise their forces quick enough and had no back up available. so in order to save lives instead of waste them on a battle they where going to lose, they 'gave in', and continued to fight an underground resistance instead. if they hadn't of done this thousands of people would have died for no reason.... the germans would still have got to paris, only a few days later.

I think most people were scared of the Germans during the second world war, I mean, they nearly did win if Germany didn't declare war on the USSR. Stalin absolutely thrashed the German army.

You need to educate yourself. Look at what happened to France in WW1 and it becomes easy to understand the French being more than a little concerned about being invaded by a nazi hoarde with plans for european wide domination and plans to exterminate certain etnic or religious groups.
Many thousands of french troops died fighting,as did many civilians either as members of the resistance or in reprisals. So look at things again and maybe you will change your mind.

you need to read some history books...if your country was captured by a murderous bunch, you might be frightened also...the Nazis were not a group I would want in my backyard. The French had no rights, women were raped and murdered at whim, men were shot dead in the streets as a joke. Scared? I would like to see you face that crowd and THEN ask this question. Are you as dumb as you sound?

They were no more scared than anyone. They were just easier to invade because they did not have the protection of the sea.

But I still can't resist this old joke:

Why are French roads lined with trees ?
So the German army can march in the shade.

Now the French have the bomb, so they can never be invaded again. Who cares if the occupation made them nervous during the war?
