There is a vast assumption that the media is liberally biased.
Why? What does it have to gain by being liberally biased?
No, I am not looking for evidence that it is, one way or the other.
I am looking for reasons that this is supposed to have come true.
Why has Fox news not been effected this way?

Saying that the owners of the media are
liberals doesn't really answer the question.
HOW DID THAT HAPPEN? What is
so attractive about media to liberals that
it ends up being as unbalanced as people
say it is. WHY is so much media owned
by liberals?

By the way, it turns out that at least in the case
of the big media outlets, they are generally
owned by conservatives or corporations.
Editorial policy is either determined at the
editorial level or by what is best for the
company.

Actually, only conservatives assume the media is liberally biased.
Liberals tend to think it is biased towards conservaties.
I think it is generally conservative, and only looks like its trying to bash Bush because he has screwed up so spectacularly and in so many ways over the past few years. Seriously, Iraq and Katrina just won't generate positive portrayals.
Then again, I was a liberal to begin with.

There have been many studies confirming the liberal bias in mainstream (print media, and network TV). The newcomers,Cable TV and talk radio, are largely conservative...
The mainstream media has been around forever, but cable and talk radio are a phenomenon of the 90's...so these programs have been available , at most 10-15 years. And the Internet, is functionally only 10 years old, while the blogosphere goes back only a few years, at longest, 5 or6 years
That is the explanation. Mainstream management types, such editors, producers, and publishers are products of either growing up, or getting their university education in the 60's and 70's (or in some cases, much earlier.)
If you consider American politics over those periods, you will find the following...The years from 1961-approximately 1975 were overwhelmingly liberal, while the 80's were dominated by the Views of Reagan and Bush 41. With a centrist president (Clinton) and a new conservative Congress (1994-2006) conservatism was dominant.
Thus if you match the careers of current writers, commentators, editors and commentators you will find a close match between when they were educated, and when their journalistic careers began matching the general time line above.
Fox news is the best example of this matching...Check out the biographies of the major commentators... Shawn Hannity, for example. received a private religious education, and started his career in the mid 80's. Oliver North, after being dismissed by Ronald Reagan was was tried in 1988 in relation to his activities while at the National Security Council. He was indicted on sixteen felony counts and on May 4, 1989, he was convicted of three: accepting an illegal gratuity, aiding and abetting in the obstruction of a congressional inquiry, and destruction of documents (by his secretary, Fawn Hall, on his instructions). He was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Gerhard A. Gesell on July 5, 1989, to a three-year suspended prison term, two years probation, $150,000 in fines, and 1,200 hours community service.
I suggest you list the top 10 on the liberal side, and the top 10 on the conservative side, and compare age, where educated, and I expect you find this correlation with the time line to generally be accurate.
Hope that gives you a good starting place.

The majority of people who work at places and own places like CBS, CNN, and NBC are democratic or dem-like. And now more than ever, they have this hatred for one man, Bush. I really do not understand how vile they are towards him or why. They truely hate this man. Look at the New York Times, that newspaper's editors are so lineral and far left and bash Bush daily its pathetic. These media outlets report on half truths and usually one sided to go against the GOP and Bush. This country has shown a pretty bad side of itself the past couple years when these media outlets and celeberties are so outspoken in down right mean ways toward our current president. The man is protecting america. I am a firm believer that if he werent in office we would have been attacked again. And instead of offering constructive criticism of just maybe a little disagreements these people just offer hate. No answers, plans, or solutions of thier own. Only hate. The democratic party is doing the same thing. They are like children. And these are the people that some want to be our leaders? America is in a down word spiral and we have forgotten the foundation of our beliefs as Americans and lost our morales.

One theory is that media presents a powerful outlet for a minority opinion. Therefore, liberal people gravitate towards that field more than others.

they are just contrarians looking for stuff to write about, when the liberals were in charge they always complained the media was too consrvative.
both sides are a bunch of crybabies.
Fox news is owned and controlled right down to content by the big corporate interests who foster their own views. it is not news. it is propaganda.
