because they are insecure about themselves, it makes them feel powerful by giving other people labels good or bad

Because someone always wants to have some amount of authority or power of another. One way to do this is label you one way or another. However, labeling is not all bad either. For in labeling someone as say a Christian, then one knows just a little more about you. Certainly not much, but in a board way they do. Same as if you are a grandmother, people know that you had children and they had children too.
I assume you mean bad labels and they can hurt and color people with the wrong intentions and attitudes that you as an individual may not have any part off. Its best to just ignore such labels and believe or state your opinions as honestly as you can without resorting to calling them by labels. It always puts you a bit above a name caller when you do not bow to their level.

I place a box before you, and I compel you to place your hand into this box without knowing what it contains.
Does it contain something harmful, beneficial, maybe neutral? Will it feel pleasant or uncomfortable or painful? Can you remove the object through the hand hole? Could you consume what is in the box, or would that kill you?
And yet, I am compelling you to place your hand in the box and you don't know what's in the box.
I say to you, "Be at peace. The box contains only a neoprene ball." You trust me that this is all that is in the box. I have provided a label for its contents. Would you still worry?
Labels allow us to deal with the otherwise unknown. When you first meet a person, you cannot learn everything there is to know about them, so you learn what you can, and like it or not, fill in the gaps with prior experiences with others sharing similiar physical, emotional, mental, or philosophical qualities.

We all need someway of easily identifying people. If they have a trait that makes then stand out then they are labelled.
When you see people on the news they may be talked about as 'Serial Killer - Fred Jones' or 'School Teacher - Alice Jones'. Without labels we'd all be just names which don't tell you anything about a person. It's unfortunate that some of us have labels we don't like - but we all have them and we all use them!

If you have a label, someone can make assumptions on you based upon what they know about people who carry that label already i.e. to label someone as posh might lead you to make assumptions that they don't earn their money, only wear designer clothes and vote conservative, which means you have to think less to interpret their behaviour. It is a psychological technique which the brain uses to save itself from hard work and does have a name, I forget what. Trouble is, the assumptions made based on that label are not always correct

Because it is easier to give people a stereotype than it is to get to know someone. We are creatures of habit. We like to think that we are all the same even when we try to support individuality. As a society it is hard to keep from labeling people and situations, because it is how we understand things. I gives us a personal reference to the person or situation.

Some people do want a label though which is why they do what they do. Makes them feel like they belong to something and gives them excuses for certain actions.

To be more comfortable with their own insecurity in some cases, in others to allow them to more easily describe your characteristics to others. Whatever it is unfair to label people as it tends to ignore individual traits that make the person what they really are. To generalise on the particular is as dangerous as particularising on the general. I would say however that at times with some of the answers one sees on here it becomes very tempting to label the people who ask and aswer questions in a certain manner.

Unfortunately most people like to label others as one type or another. They don't really want to keep an open mind and try to understand the person that you are.

It is a natural human tendency to group things. For our own health and safety we decide whether some things are dangerous or not, whether foods are edible by categorizing them and whether certain creatures (as well as other human beings) are a threat to us.
By placing things into the apprioriate groups, we are practicing self-preservation. Although, nowadays, this trait can be hurtful to others. People will always categorize things in their head, whether we judge and make assumptions about other people based on these mental groupings is what we need to overcome.
It isn't easy to overcome such behaviors, especially when so much of our society encourages it to continue.
Even you yourself caused me to make assumptions about you by having the "xxx" before and after your name.... I assumed you are Straightedge. I might be correct, I might not. But I made the observation and I instinctively assigned you to that group.
I do, however, consciously make an effort to not judge a person by such things. I cannot assume you are vegan or tattooed or listen to hardcore music. I allow you to create who you are to me, by pushing aside these things that accompany my ideas of Straightedgers.
However, if I knew nothing about you except your screen name and I had to make a split second decision for a work issue or something, I might assume these things and make my choice about a matter based on them. This is where first impressions count.
It's a fact of life, that we must always consider when presenting ourselves to the world. We decide what we want to convey. You need to take a look at yourself and decide if you are actually leading people to label you a certain way or if they are really the ones choosing label for you.

What exactly is wrong with labels? Ask a Black guy if he is proud to be Black - Damned right he is!! Ask anyone at a gay pride march if they are proud to be gay - what do you think the answer will be? My Dad was a Miner as was his Dad I am probably 'labelled' as working class as a result. Am I proud of that label - damned right I am!!
