I hope you are still in elementary school. In any case, one of the important formulas to remember is Area of any closed figure. One of the simplest figures is the Rectangle with 4 sides.. A rectangle has a length, usually indicated by the letter l and a width, w. I know it may sound trivial, but ANY two (2) opposite sides are equal to each other. The longer side is the length.

To find the area of the rectangle just multiply the length by the width. Area = l x w. Thus, your problem/question should actually say, a length of 5 feet and a width or 4 feet. Or, Area = 5x4 or 20 square feet. ( note the units).

Imagine a rectangle as the floor figure of your own classroom. Usually, one side is longer than the other. Just look at the long side and turn your head 90 degrees and you see the other smaller side.

It is really important to remember this formula because it is very useful in calculating many things in real life; like how much carpet are you going to buy, how much paint you are going to use for your walls, and estimate how much drapery you need to cover your windows.
