It is the largest country in area. Most of Russia's land area is pretty much either uninhabitable, underpopulated and undeveloped with no major political units holding great military and sway to resist a colonial Moscow-led government to dominate peoples in those areas. It was easy for Moscow-led political imperial or communist system to overrun the rest of the country. However, the actual RUSSIA now is much smaller than the "Russia" of the old USSR, which included the now independent nations of Ukraine, Estonia, etc.

well it just kept growing and growing. i think panama just gave up after a while. russia is still growing, pretty soon it will consume the entire north pole, china, japan, etc.
