The position of the arrow and the cross on the circle helps explain their meaning. The symbol for female (Venus) is a circle placed above a cross, while the symbol for male (Mars) is a circle with an arrow pointing upwards (to the right).

A cross with a circle at the top represents the rise of spirit over matter. Considered a feminine quality, this represents female energy.

A circle with an arrow pointing upward indicates matter in supremacy over spirit. Considered a masculine quality, this represents male energy.

The origins can be traced from Mesopotamia (now Irak) These symbols were used for the 7 planets of our solar system.
Venus was represented by a circle and a cross below it, and stood for feminin things and women, love and beauty.
Mars was represented by a circle surmounted by an arrow pointing to the right, stood for masculin things and men, war and roughness.
Jupiter, god-like things and people, was similar to number 4
Neptune by a 3-prongs fork
Mercury, Saturn, Uranus, Pluto still have their own symbol too.
The Sun is still used in astronomy as a circle with a dot in the center.
The Moon as a crescent moon.
And the Earth is as a circle with a cross inside.
Good Luck

It's not originally that way...each of the planetary symbol is some placement of a cross near a circle, it's just that Mars' cross got redrawn as an arrow.
Mars is definately the most 'male' planet, in terms of Astrological influence, and Venus the most 'female'.

All of the above are correct but the signs are quite obviously visual symbols of the genitalia, the male upright arrow symbolising the errect penis, and the below centered cross the vagina (perhaps a target for the arrow like penis)
