I read it a while ago, but can't remember the title of the author. Its basically about a society where second children are considered illegitimate (I think). Anyway, the story is based around the life of one such illegitimate child who is forced to live a life concealed from the public, or else she will be taken away or something. In the end, an organisation 'rescues' her and gives her a new identity so she can live a proper life, but without her family. Has anyone heard of this book?? I would really love to read it again. Thanks.

Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix sounds a lot like that. There's a whole series about the Shadow Children by her Among the Hidden, Among the Imposters, Among the Betrayed, Among the Barons, Among the Enemy, and Among the Free. They're all very good if you decide to read the series.
