Not every one hates the French, it is mainly ignorant English people, who have not forgot the war, the 1066 one that is as for eating frogs and snails, I remember my parents wolfing down whelks ( sea snails) eels, ( sea snakes ) roe ( fish eggs ) oh yes and a lovely delicacy from the Gloucester area , Elva's , ( Baby eels ), lots of them at the same time, looked like a gooey mass of worms in the pan, I am not saying the French are better or worse but local eating habits are disgusting just about any where you go, I am an Englishman living in the French speaking part of Switzerland and since I have learnt to speak French I have got to know the French people better and most of them are human.

Man, I love France and the French. I don't get it - the food, the art, the history, the culture, the passion of a society that values someting other than money, status, and things. I think it's jealousy. Most Americans would love to be at peace with the world, get a free lunch every day, have six weeks of paid vacation, and work only 32 hours a week. But we won't crusade for it in this country.
I don't get it. Vive la France, baby!!

I don't like to bash the French, I do speak the language, love to go to Montreal shopping, think french woman are beautiful and like being where at 5 ft 7 inches I'm tall for a man and have many women taller than myself.
As to why people hate the French I'm afraid your reasons are all HUNDREDS of years out of date. The french bathe as often as most civilized people (Japanese excluded of course). The did however at the time bathing was rare in Europe and north americia smoother themselves in colone or perfume which could be enough to make people gag. That lead to the bathing myth.
Snail and frogs legs are now considered a delicacy and if you haven't tried them you don't know what you are missing.. Also try alligator (an Americian dish and ants) In case you can't tell I instructd survival for the army but my grandmother always said she would rather know than die wondering.
As to why the French are almost universally despised. It is almost exactlly the same reason the Americans are (whom I also happen to like) Arrogance and Interference.. Arrogance if pride in things you didn't actually do or false pride. The French think they have the best everything. Americans are funny because they claim the same thing thing but know better (ever know an American who didn't want an expensive forgein car of fashions) as for interference in the States it's by the gov. the people are to polite to dream of it (when your in the states when outside their own country they become famous for bad manners)
The French also insist on the use of French every international airport outside of France including Russia during the cold war used English for air traffic control. France used French.
In Qubec the often will pretend they don't speak English (this is Montreal most of the rest of the province don't speak English) they don't do this with Americans but English speaking Canadians.
Cut story (normally if spoken to in French in answer in French as well as I can. Once I was travelling to New Brunswick by bus and taking a Japanese course at the time. I used the time on the bus to study) When I went to the cafe in the bus station for a coffee the cook was giving the customer in front of me a hard time (it was mutual) and pretending to speak only French. When he asked for my order I meant to say "une cafe, double, double) instead I said " Kohi to ni sato ni milku, O Kudasai" he immediately switched to excellent English.

The reason people THINK they hate the French is more often than not out of sheer ignorance...I've met people who say they hate the French, when they've never been to france, or met anyone from there....a lot of it is down to the media..;I moved to France over 9 years ago, and speaking from experience I can HONESTLY say, they are one of the most helpful, understanding, and genuine races I have ever met, and I can add patient to that list as well (especially when I was learning the language)

The English hate the French as we have spent most of our history at war with them.
Americans should love the French as they helped you win the War of Independence.
What can we do about them? Accuse them of hiding weapons of mass destruction, and bomb them back to the stone-age! Well, it worked in Iraq.

I like the French. What you said is not all of them, just some of them. Most French teens eat at normal fast food places and are normal kids.

I don't personally know any French people, but the ones I've met (hols.) seem exactly the same as any other nation - some OK, some not.
I actually admire the way they kick up if the govt, does something they don't like.
