I am an assistant to a very busy business owner. I do anything that I'm asked to do. But a lot of times, my boss get too caught up in her own work to stop and assign anything to me. I feel like I'm being lazy and she's doing all the work. I don't try to do this. When I go to her office to get some work to do, she tells me to come back when she's not so busy. I often times sit with nothing to do, feeling like I could be punished at any time for not doing work. What should I do?

Ok, this is why I'm on Yahoo right now. I've done all the busy work I can an am long done with it all. Also, she comes in 1-2 hours later than me in the morning and leave 1-2 hours before me. It's hard to find her with any "free" time. I've tried to talk to her about it but she is very busy in the short time that she is here each day. Any other suggestions?

You have two options.
1. Pace yourself. Spread out your work into the next day if possible.
2. Volunteer. (NEVER DO THIS)

Hope that makes it an easy choice!

try to think of ways to improve the company and or make the boss's job easier or more efficient

create databases to track info that is not currently being tracked or create a better filing system

clean the office, tidy up and organize areas

you probably dont want this job forever so just do a good job so you can get a recommendation

- another idea would be to have im(aol or msn messenger) set up for your office or between you and your boss- everyone in our office uses im to send messages and my bosses often im me to do certain tasks for them and its great to ask each other questions and give updates on situations or projects

Discuss it with your boss when she's not so busy. In the mean time
I wouldn't worry too much about it. Maybe you could straighten up some or do "busy work".

Make an appointment to see your boss. In the meantime you have to "look busy" !!

ask her if there's anything you can do to help with her work load. if she turns you away again, enjoy the quiet time, she'll call you when you're help is wanted.
