I was on T-mobile for ages and then got a way better plan from Orange. When I called to cancel my T-mobile plan, they gave me the option of keeping the phone on a pound a month plan. What I'd like to do now is swap numbers so that the number currently on my T-mobile phone is on my Orange phone.

Phone both T-Mobile and Orange and ask for a PAC code (Porting Authorisation Code) for each number. Give the PAC code from T-Mobile to Orange and the PAC code from Orange to T-Mobile. Within approximately 5 days, your numbers should be swapped without any other changes to your networks. Hope this helps.

What you need to do is called a number port. You need to call T-Mobile and Orange and have them port out the Orange number to T-Mobile and port in the T-Mobile number to Orange. If the customer care department might be able to do it, but if not, there should be a special department that can.

Call the supplier you want to keep and tell them you want to 'Port' a number to them, its all routine after that

What is MNP?

Mobile Number Portability (MNP) is the industry agreed process by which a customer can switch from one network operator to another and take their existing mobile number with them, for example from Orange to 3. This process is also sometimes called migrating or transferring.

Starting the process
Contact your current Service Provider (the company your contract is with) and ask for a Porting Authorisation Code (PAC).
The PAC is your authority to request a transfer and will allow the Network you wish to move to, to request your number be transferred to them. However the PAC is only valid for 30 calendar days so you must action your request promptly.

Your current Service Provider can only refuse to issue a PAC for the following two reasons:

your number is disconnected - i.e. you must not cancel your existing contract before requesting a PAC
you have not yet fulfilled your obligations under your existing minimum term contract
How long does it take?
Your current Service Provider must give you a PAC within two working days of your request or provide a reason why it cannot be issued. If the reply doesn't reach you within a week, you will need to contact your current Service Provider. If you are not happy with their response, you have the option to contact Oftel, the telecoms watchdog, on 020 7634 8888.
Your PAC is only valid for 30 calendar days, your request must be submitted to your new Service Provider within that period.

Your number can be transferred any time between 5 and 37 calendar days from the date your PAC is issued.

Your new Service Provider will give seven calendar days notice of the Porting Date.

Different time scales apply to customer transferring more than 25 numbers at once.

What do I need to do next?
Once you have your PAC, order your new handset online and enter the PAC in the relevant box at the end of the ordering process.
Once authorised we will despatch your new handset with a temporary number. Once your new handset has safely arrived, contact your new Network on the following numbers and quote your temporary number and PAC to them. They will normally transfer your requested number within approximately 5 to 7 working days.

You need to contact the service providor whos number you want to keep just ask for a PAC code as you are changing networks and want to keep this number they will provide you with the PAC code. Once you have a PAC code call up your current providor with it.
All providor phone numbers are found on their websites
When i went from vodafone to 02 i made 2 calls and it took about 5 days to change over and my phone was out of action on the day of the change over for a while I kept if off as I was told to do this. If you want to swap the numbers you will need a PAC code for both but you would have to check if you can do this.
