In winter, in outside cold air a given % relative humidity is reached with LESS absolute amount of water vapor than in summer. This is because colder air has a lower humidity-carrying capability than warm. Excess water condensates, and leaves the air as dew, rain, hail, or snow.
In winter, whatever air gets into your basement (pulled in by the furnace, or otherwise) has a lower "maximum" absolute humidity content. But once it gets heated, even modestly, its relative humidity drops, even while it carries the same water vapor amount as it did when it was outside, and much colder.
This is why you sometime see humidifiers attached to heating radiators, but not to AC: air conditioning removes vapor from the air thanks to the same principle, and dehumidifiers too.

You should only use your dehumidifier during the summer. Durring the Winter you need to turn it off!!!! In the winter, the air is dry. You should be using a humidifier. If you notice you have a lot static electricity. If you have a furnace it probably has a humidifier on it already. If you have hot water heating (radiators) then you should go and get a humidifier and put it in your main room in your house. You will notice a difference.

The humidity is usually higher during the summer months, so far I'm still getting a full pail every day but we are having quite a bit or rain this fall, but my dehumidifier will fill up in a couple of days in the winter.

forced air heat drys out the air. Air conditioning also pulls moisture out. It all depends on which one you have running and where you live. In the winter with the heat on you might consider not running the dehumidifier. In the north we add moisture with a humidifier.

Just dryer air during that time, which is why you usually use a humidifier with the furnace.
