For example, is the latest version backward compatible with earlier versions, like 4.1? Also, I use a Sony Clie, it's not a device I can select from Palm's site, does it matter?

Not an easy question to answer. If you mean are programs written for an older Palm OS compatible with a newer OS? The answer is yes and no. Some work, some don't. I suspect it's as much controlled by how closely the software developer follows Palm recommendations as it is new features being added to the newer OS.

If you mean, "Can I load a newer OS onto an older Palm device"? Probably, yes, if you are the kind of person who likes to tinker and don't really want to do anything productive with the device.
