Find out what kind of soil you have. Alkaline....through to acidic...that will help you decide what kind of plants...you can buy a soil testing kit from the local garden centre. without knowing the size, which direction it faces and some other general points it's a tough question. Try BBC Gardners World web site for advice, tips on planting and some great ideas!! Look for different foliage...and leaf shapes. Different types of plants flower at different times of the year. Mix foliage with flowers. Shrubs and trees for more height. Do you have areas of wall or fence that you can grow climbing plants... I had a shady area at the bottom of the garden at the back of my house...it was always quite damp...I had some fab ferns there. Once established they took care of themselves and really filled up the area nicely.

How big is the area? You should choose perennials. Plant then by size they grow. small ones at from. Also check the time they will have the flowers. I guess you want to have flowers all the time. Also with the perennials you do not need to plant every year because they grow. You just need to maintance them

This doesnt fairly reply your query however you will have to be mindful that the higher the plant the extra space is wanted by way of the roots and for the reason that of this could no longer thrive in a pot or box.

I personally find that cactus is one of the easiest to plant---if you have enough sunlight and give it enough water...cactus also looks extremely beautiful when it's flowering!
