I've been with the company for 2 months and just found that I'm expecting (YAY!). I'm expecting a bonus in December after my 3 months probation period is done. My plan is tell my boss at the end of my first trimester (beginning of Jan) and to work until the end of my 2nd trimester (mid-April). I don't intend to return to work for several years at least, but don't necessarily want to burn bridges. Thoughts?

I am going through the same thing! Tell your boss after your first trimester and tell them they are you taking an unpaid pregnancy leave. Now.. you dont have to tell them that you arent coming back. Make sure that they think you actually are coming back, otherwise they will cancel your insurance.

It depends on your job. If you do a lot of manual labor, you should say something by the first trimester to avoid putting you or the baby in danger. If it's an office job, try to give your boss at least 1-2 months, so he can find someone else. But I would wait until you get your bonus, because I've heard of some people telling their bosses they were going to be leaving soon, and they got fired.

You should tell your boss as soon as you are sure you are prego (via your doc is best, with note of proof... don't go to your boss with the home pregnancy test..lol) especially if there is something in the workplace that can be considered harmful for pregnant women. This will show your boss you respect him to let him know what's going on, let him know how long you desire to work before giving birth... you don't necessarily have to include the part about wanting to stay at home afterward (you can go into detail on this once you have your baby) but depending on how close you are to your boss and how dependant they are on your position, you may want to clue them in just so they can be prepared. If you are fired on the simply on the grounds of being pregnant, you can get the company in trouble for harassment! Check the fine print in your employment contract, but most companies are required to treat pregnancies the same as an unforseeable illness (ha,ha).
Just make sure to keep communication open b/t you and your boss and that should prevent bridges from being burnt.
Good luck and congrats!

I would call him to tell him the news versus doing it by email (this is something best handled person to person). I would just say, "well, I wanted you to know that I am expecting a baby in...." I had a similar situation and my boss was very nice about. All other details can be handled by HR. Also, from personal experience, you do not have to discuss your plans for returning from maternity leave (or not) with anyone but HR. You may feel pressure from your immediate supervisor (as they are going to try to plan out stuff), but you should not be required to make any decisions until just before you come back. I hope this helps. Good luck!

Wait until after you are in your second trimester before telling your boss. It is your choice if you wish to tell them if you do not plan to return.

My recommendation as a small business owner: Tell him/her that you haven't made a decision regarding your pregnancy and parenting plans but as soon as you know you will inform them. Give them at least 4 weeks to find a replacement. Giving a large notice will help keep those bridges intact.

Good Luck & Congratulations!!!

It's fine to wait until the end of your first trimester, but do not tell them you plan on leaving. At least not at first. You may want to wait on that. Otherwise, they may fire you first before you get a chance to quit.

Good luck with your boss and congratulations on the new baby!

I would probably tell them that you are pregnant...but maybe tell them that you haven't decided whether or not your coming back after you have the baby...until you get closer to giving birth..I would also check and see if your insurance will cancel upon termination...some insurance companies are paid in advance so even though you quit, you still have coverage until the end of that month..Good luck and Congratulations!

It's a tricky situation but I think it's advised to inform your boss when you have found out for sure you're pregnant. You bonus should not be dependant on whether or not your pregnant, but dependant on your performance. Discuss openly your plans on working to full term and maternity leave. You might want to visit your HR office first to find out what type of maternity leave you are entitled to. Best of luck!

Good luck with it all. I don't know. I told my boss and they told me to work one more week, and let me go. I wasn't even 6 months pregnant. I am not saying this will happen to you, just plan it out, and you're right, don't burn bridges. Good luck.

Congratulations!!! I was in that exact situation once. I told my boss and he was very supportive abput it. Unfortunately, I lost the baby (miscarraige) I wished that I had waited longer as having the entire company know that I was pregnant and then miscarry was very hard on me. I'd put off telling him until you've had your 1st ultrasound
