Do ANY symbols appear when you press the key? If it is a different symbol than you expected, your keyboard is probably setup for a different input location, more than likely America. You can change this to UK by going into the Control Panel, then Regional and Language settings. You then click the languages tab, then the advanced button. On the Settings tab of the box that appears, change your input language to English (United Kingdom), then all should be fine. You may be asked for your CD.
My response assumes that you have WinXP Pro installed, and that you are in the UK. Mail me if you need any further help......

Have you tried both Shift keys? Also, is it just the @ that does not work? Does the 2 work as well?

Your keyboard is set to US.
To test, use shift 2 (should give you the " symbol, but will give you the @ symbol)
If this does happen.. and I am pretty sure it would.. go to control panel and change your keyboard to UK.
Happens all the time at work - with my students.
