I was watching this programme once and there was this kid who was using braile to read, however he was born deaf and blind. How did he learn to do this? because it's not as if people can show him how to read braile as he is blind, and nor can he be told how to read braile since he is deaf. I am not taking this piss or anything, I am genuinely curious as to how they do this? It is quite remarkable and just goes to show what humans can achieve despite great disabilities in their life.

The first thing that they need to learn is that there's a connection between a symbol and its meaning (if you've seen "The Miracle Worker," think of Annie Sullivan constantly signing words into Helen's hands). You can't get anywhere until this connection is made. Once you've done that you can get them to understand that the hand symbol for "A" (or whatever) is the same as the braille symbol on the page that represents "A". Then on to "B" and so forth.
Bear in mind that there's very little other sensory input so these people don't have a lot to distract them from exploring and learning, if they're motivated.

Helen Keller's life is a good example but it doesn't really answer the question. She wasn't born blind and deaf. She had a memory of what things looked and sounded like which gave her some advantage over someone who is born with out sight or hearing.

Try to get hold of the biography of Helen Keller. A fever at a very young age (19 months I think) left her blind and deaf. At age six her tutor started to teach her the alphabet by using dripping water from a tap. It's the most incredible story ever.

Oh gads, everyone who has answered with the Miracle worker is right, and I was to late to answer. There was another answerer who explained it well if you did not see the movie. Now I have to go search through my tapes to find the movie, cos I have craving to watch it again, as I have so many times before. Life's miracles keep me living and by technology let me answer this. I am not blind or deaf though, but had friends in both circumstances. I did not change the drop down box to "USA only q&a's, but am courious to know what your phrase "I am not taking this piss or anything" means.

Good question. I'm not sure how it is accomplished now, but if you are curious about at least one way, you should watch The Miracle Worker. If you're not familiar with the movie, it was made in 1962 and is about how Annie Sullivan taught Helen Keller how to communicate.

Read the story of Helen Keller, written by her teacher many years ago. It describes the situation you're asking about. There were many problems to sumount and solve them, they did.
