Yeah when I was little like7yrs old I bagged my parents for a sibling. I was basically the biggest brat around my parents but with other people I acted like an angel. I got what I wanted all the time. Well I turned 8yrs old and 2months later my sister Jessica was born. I was an absolute angel ever since. I grew up over night. I so I guess if my sister was never born Id be a complete b itch.

My pets and my books. I had books to escape to and pets for solace. This is not to say that my home life was unhappy, I do however hold that the expression dysfunctional family is redundant.
I learned to nurture and care for other living things (while tormenting my siblings :-) by having all kinds of furry things around me. And Nancy Drew and her buds, Bess and George were very real while we solved case after case together.
To this day my critters and books are closer than my family (in another state --- hmmm that's an interesting statement), but they are only a phone call away.
edit: native new yorker reminded me of two other things - my parents's(?) sense of humor and unconditional love.

I grew up in a village back home. We stayed in a big family with aunt and uncles. Basically few families together.
My parents have always taught me to be tolerating. Whenever i get new toys, they tell me to share with my cousins. New clothes that i get sometimes my parents tell me to give my cousins. Whenever we go out to buy something, they always have bought things for all the other small kids at home even though its as small as a candy.
Seeing that as i grew up, it taught me to share, tolerate and not to be selfish. When i shifted years later for college, the nature comes by easily among friends ,and got me along quite well.
I really thank my parents for teaching me this value which will be with me forever.

Being sent to my aunt's farm in the summertime. I learned about hard work, kindness to others, and good humor. My own family was ripped apart by divorce and drugs, but she showed me that there was a light at the end of the tunnel.

This one time i brought a 10$ bill to school, and when recess came i let everyone look at it. it was a big deal because i never had money of my own before! anyways, later that day i lost it and never found it again. It taught me the value of money. and now i also always carry a wallet! =)
