that was something doctors did in the past to stimulate the baby. to get them to cry to clear their lungs. most doctors now use a tube to suck out the baby lungs and most baby cry right away on their own.

You must be kidding. It helps the baby to breathe initially. I don't think too many places do that anymore...maybe midwives..thats it.

They slap the child cause that makes the child cry n while crying the baby tends to breadth on it's own..........................it is necessary to do it......................it's not a cruel thing as such!
