always sing from your diaphram not your throat as far as taking a breath you always need to but if you are singing a song along with the radio for example listen to the song closely to see where the singer pauses for a breath and it you know a long note is coming up take in a deep breath and gradually let the sound and breath out (you'll be able to hold the note longer)

Inward singing! Tenacious D style! Just kidding. Try to focus more on your everyday breathing techniques and not only on your breathing when you sing. You need to develop deep breathing techniques. This will help you to not run out of breath when you sing. There is a great video series for deep breathing exercises called "Body Flex." This trains your body to breath deep naturally without thinking about it. Another technique would be to talk or sing while you exercise. Both of these will increase your lung capacity over time and you will not struggle for breath as much.

Do breathing exercises. Lie flat and notice that when you breathing normally, your tummy (diaphragm) actually moves 'out' when you take a deep breath - people make the mistake of pulling their tummy in and puffing out their chest when they take a deep breath, which doesn't get the most air in yer lungs. You need to focus on moving your diaphragm out and down as much as possible. Take biggest breaths you can this way, hold and slowly let the air out in an even way - you'll be amazed how long it can take. Keep practising this exercise as much as poss and you'll notice you can sing longer before you need to take another breath.

You have to practice your breathing techniques. Sing a note and hold onto it as long as possible , the more you do it the better you will become. Also nerves plays a big part , try to relax as much as you can. Just think your singing to a room full of friends !

Listen hard to the song, read the words, take a breath when it comes to the end of a line, not in the middle and practice breathing from your diaphram, not your throat. it will help immensly! i also find having a glass of water handy for in between songs helps a bunch!

Inhale between phrases, and before long notes.
If possible, sing from the diaphragm instead of from your lungs. That helps, too.

Use your stomach muscles instead of your neck, don't strain your vocal cords and don't smoke, that will kill your voice...
