I'm 38-39 weeks pregnant and have been having braxton hicks contractions for 20 hours now. They are completely painless and come every 20-30 minutes. I went to see my doctor a few hours ago she checked my baby and everything was fine, she could not however explain why the BH are holding on for so long and said that I should call her if they start getting painful. My question is, has anyone else experienced BH contractions for a prolonged period of time? and do you think that the real contractions will begin soon? Thanks for your answers

i had painless braxton hicks for a day before my baby came and was told that's all it was, i had my daughter the next day and was already 5cms when the midwife checked me so i think even though you are not in labour as such them braxton hicks could still be helping you dilate.
id be surprised if you don't have your baby in the next few days.
good luck

I've been having braxton hicks since my second semester. I am 28 weeks now and I'm afraid the baby is going to come too early because I get several BH a day and the one day for a couple of hours I was getting them 2-3 minutes apart! They eventually stopped and since they weren't painful just uncomfortable I didn't call to dr or anything..that was a few days ago and I'm still pregnant so I don't know. With my first baby I didn't have BH that I remember..my water broke and contractions started and well the rest is histroy. I would think for you that labor is right around the corner with being 39 weeks along. Best of luck and congrats!

no happend to me but I read this

By the time you're within a couple of weeks of your due date, these contractions may get more intense and more frequent, and cause some discomfort. Unlike the earlier painless and sporadic Braxton Hicks contractions that caused no obvious cervical change, these may help your cervix "ripen": gradually soften and efface, and maybe even begin to dilate a bit. This period is sometimes referred to as "pre-labor."
What can I do if my Braxton Hicks contractions are making me uncomfortable?
If you're within a few weeks of your due date, try these measures:
• Change your activity or position. Sometimes walking provides relief, and other times resting eases your contractions. (Real labor contractions, on the other hand, will persist and progress regardless of what you do.)

• Take a warm bath to help your body relax.

• Try drinking a couple glasses of water, since these contractions can sometimes be brought on by dehydration.

• Try relaxation exercises or slow, deep breathing. This won't stop the Braxton Hicks contractions, but it may help you cope with the discomfort. (Use this opportunity to practice some of the pain-management strategies you learned in your childbirth preparation class.)

good luck and congrats on your bub

I dont know what your doctor is talking about. I had braxton hicks contractions for two days straight about 5 an hour. I was only 6 months pregnant. They went away and have come back here and there. but anyway.

Most women have consistant prelabor contractions (braxon hicks) for days and even weeks before real labor kicks in.

My friend had them for two weeks straight, just not enough to call it labor, in intervals about like yours. Another off and on for a month. My cousin had them her whole pregnancy from 3-9 months, atleast 5 a day.

Just stay active and move around. They do help bring on labor, and the more you can move the more it helps.

I've been noticing them more lately. Asked the midwife about it & she said it was totally normal & to be expected. This is my 2nd pregnancy & I don't remember having them at all with my first pregnancy (son-5yrs old), so I'm really noticing them this time. I'm wondering the same this about the real contractions starting soon. I hope not- I'm only 31 weeks.

Start timing them. If they 5 minutes or less apart call your doc. You may have real contractions, they just arent that painful for you (YET). You never know.
