The best bet is to use the brand of remote that matches your opener. If you have a Genie brand you can use either Genie or Overhead Door (same company), if it is a Sears, do that or Liftmaster. Liftmaster makes all sears openers. You also nee to find out how old it is. The newer models don't use "dip switches" anymore, they are on a revolving code so you never use the same code twice. If your opener was made after 1993 it will have photo cells at the bottom of the opening to prevent entrapment. Most made after that have the revolving code.

It depends on you garage door (how old it is) as far as singnal strenght. Most older even modern garage door openers when you push the button send a signal out to the remote and the remote sends a siganl out to the garage door. This is because the garage door opener changes the code of the remote every time the button is pressed (encryption). So no matter how powerfull of a remote you purchase your limited to the signal strenght of the garage door. The signal has to come back to the remote or the door won't open. Mostly anywhere you go today (sears) (walmart) you can pick up a cheap 9.00 garage door remote....

Make sure you get the right remote for your garage door!! Write down the exact model of the door you have and take it to Lowes or HomeDepot. If you have the original remote bring it with you as there are several types and many remotes don't work with all doors. These days all remotes have great range in comparison to old ones.
