What is better for a grill charcoal, propane, or natural gas? Should it be fixed or portable(the grill)?

I use both gas and charcoal barbecues. For quick grilled foods like hamburgers a gas barbeque is fine. But for really good smoke flavored foods like chickens, good steaks and roasts I prefer the charcoal barbeque.

Keep in mind that when the food is cooked over a direct flame that is called grilling. Barbequing is when the food is roasted by indirect heat in a smoky environment. Adding water soaked woodchips like mesquite and apple can add some great flavors.

If you can only have one barbeque and you want portability then I would recommend one of the smaller portable charcoal models. It should be at least 18-inches in diameter or you will only be able to grill. If you want the best all around none portable barbeque buy the 22-inch Weber with the ash catcher feature. You will never regret it even if you buy other gas models later you will find yourself using the Weber for the next 20-years. I do not have any association with Weber other than being a satisfied customer.

The best charcoal starter is one of those chimneys that you put the charcoal in and put balled up newspaper under the chimney to start it. It doesn’t leave any chemical/gas taste in your foods.

I really enjoyed my natGas, fixed grill bought from the gas company as a promo to get customers to use more natGas. However, after time, the gas company no longer made the grill any more, an important part couldn't be replaced and I had to dig up the whole mess and replace the section of utility pipe where they had drilled a hole. I've got the propane grill on wheels now because of convenience but am uncomfortable with the fact that propane increases carcenigens when it first get lit. Tobacco companies stopped using propane in their drying sheds.

So if I had my preference I would have the grill on wheels that connects to a wall outlet for natGas.

Last first, I like portable because if I move I can take it with me. As far as gas goes, I like propane and charcoal both. I have a Napoleon Grill that can do both. Here is a link. The bottom link is my grill and I love the infrared feature. Cooks steaks in 1800 deg heat in about 8 minutes for medium.

I think you should go with the natural gas grill. I am kind of biased though as I work for a natural gas company! Seriously though, I was raised up with natural gas so that is all that I have ever known and I have had good results with it. If you do get a natural gas grill, it can't be as portable as the others since it will have to be hooked up to underground gas lines.

You may want to check your local natural gas company because the company that I work for are having big sales on our grills. It could save you a lot of money and you can get a better quality grill than you could at Wal-Mart or some place like that.

It depends on preference. People like gas because it is quick and easy and not messy as far as charcoal. It also cooks quicker. Charcoal can be cheaper if you catch charcol on sale. But it's a little messy and takes longer to light and depending on what your cooking can take longer as well. Charcoal has it's advantages though. With charcoal you can smoke food using wood and some people say Charcoal has some certain flavor in it. Charcoal grill is also cheaper then gas. The problem with gas is that if you run out of gas your cooking stops. This is why most people have a spare full tank...

Propane or natural gas is easier to start and less mess, but I prefer charcoal. I swear I can taste the difference and like charcoal.
