I do wish there were more gay black men up in the Boston area.

I think it has to do with double standards and racial stereotype images. For instance; gay white men are afforded more respect than black gay men. If and when they come out of the closet they are still conceived and treated as men. That coupled with the fact that many blacks are raised in christian environments; and we know about the tabooed implementation on that subject. In regards to you finding a black gay man in Boston; they are there. However; you may want to check out the black clubs/bars to find you fetish type.

There is a lot more social pressure within the African American community to NOT be gay, some stems from the church, some from machismo in the culture.

Add to that gay men are stigmatized to some extent and black men would think twice to double the reasons for someone to discriminate against them.

Not for nothing, some gay white men are also just as prone to prejudices as their hetero counterparts.

Perhaps as barriers come down it will be easier for gay black men to be "out" as gay white men.

Black men have a lot more to prove than white men. Society as a whole has black men typecast as this "character" who is either gangsta & completely unapproachable or a black man who is on top of his game businesswise and DOMINATES everything completely. (which also scares alot of ignorant people) So when u have a black man who is gay...he has to shatter this preconceived stereotype that everyone believes he should be. It takes more to create a safe and progressive world for a black gay man.

I believe that Black heterosexuals tend to be more bigoted towards gay people. I think this might make it harder. I know a lot of Black people, both gay and non-gay, disagree regarding the level of anti-gay bigotry among Black people, and it makes some people very angry. But this has been my experience.

I wonder if there is any research out there which measures views that Black people have regarding gay people.

I think it's the concept of the pandimensionality of the person's identity. They are oppressed as black men, and they are oppressed as gay men. They may find trouble finding acceptance of their gay identity in the Black community, just as they may find resistance to their Black identity in the gay community. Unfortunate in both cases (and hardly absolute in either case), but that might be what people meant.

Black men are typically more macho and more manly than white men. Some of their families might have a harder time taking it.

because the stigma of being gay is bad enough, but to be black and gay is considered worse by some.

I can't really explain it. Black men are suppose to be tough. Gangster like. Pimps.
So if he is gay then he is a wuss.
