I've always wondered, here in Dallas, there's a LOT of them, but none close to the city, by at least 10 miles.

Look at the map, check how far away the closest one is from the City. I just think it's funny because a lot of my friends and I have to drive for a long time to get some ice cream, even when we got literally hundreds of choices for fast food closer... meaning that most likely they'd make a killing if they had a restaurant somewhere more highly transitable, rather than by a tiny dirt road to nowhere. lol

I've noticed that too. They are always on the out skirts of a metropolitian city. In Houston they were on the city borders. I has to have something to do with urbanite perception, cost of leasing, and market competition. Cities have a Baskin Robbin's, Ben & Jerry's, or Italian gelatinos (sp?), or even just a marble slab creamery that provide high quality ice cream and a variation of flavors for any ice cream love. Then you also have the plethora of fast food establishments, which all might make a Dairy Queen less of a viable option to have in a city. But! They are in some malls!!!

It's the same here in Raleigh, NC. Most of the Dairy Queens are near the highway with the big signs, or they are in the suburbs and towns surrounding the city. We actually don't even have many in Raleigh. I would guess no more than 5 in the entire triangle area, and there are 2 on the same street.

The Dairy Queen is well within the city limits where I live. Maybe there is too much competition in Dallas, or the franchise is too expensive in the city, thus giving any potential franchisee a lousy return on the investment.

I don't know about your city but where I'm from in Jersey City we have a Dairy Queen in walking distance, we used to have two until they shut one down. Why are you eating Dairy Queen anyway? Research "Cold Stone Creamery", they have the best ice cream, even worth driving for.

If the restaurants are outside the city they get highway traffic and make more money from people coming and leaving town and wanting a quick stop for grub

We have them in Atlanta, too. Maybe Dallas just isn't a Dairy Queen kind of town...

Or Municipal taxes.
