Robert sells one gallon cartons of milk (4 quarts) for $3.09 and half gallon for $1.65 each. Assume that the number of cents you pay for a carton of milk varies linearly with number of quarts the cartoon holds.

P = total cost
p = price per quart
q = # of quarts
c = constant price

3.09 = 4p + c
c = 3.09 - 4p

1.65 = 2p + c
1.65 = 2p + (3.09 - 4p)
1.65 - 3.09 = 2p - 4p
-1.44 = -2p
p = .72

3.09 = 4(.72) + c
c = 3.09 - 2.88
c = .21

P = .72q + .21

What you are forgetting is that there can be a base constant price to which the variable price is added. That constant being c.

Q = number of quarts you buy.

If you buy a multiple of 4 quarts you will pay the whole price in gallons price , if you buy a different amount you will pay at least part of the total price in half-gallons price. You are only allowed to buy multiples of two quarts.

at the end you need an equation which says :

price = 3.09*number of gallons bought but expressed in quarts + 1.65*number of half gallons left over after you finished paying for all those gallons.

this doesn't sound right. in order for the price to vary linearly, the price per quart must be constant, that is for example, for 4 quarts costing $3.09, then each quart must cost 1/4 of that, or $0.77, so

P = .77 * q

but that equation doesn't hold for the half gallon. are you sure you have the question correct?
