Based on Dr. Mader's diet recommendations (http://www.petdoc.ws/TortDiet.html):

- About 50% 'forage'- dried or green grasses, hays, leaves, yard plants, flowers, etc.
- 35% vegetables- aim for colorful veggies and dark leafy greens. Include mushrooms and sprouts in this mix.
- 10% fruits, melons, and berries- pretty much anything but citrus. (Increase to about 20% for red- and yellow-foot tortoises)
- Less than 5% proteins- like hard-boiled eggs lightly mashed with the shells, cereals, cooked chicken, etc. (For some tortoises, like hingebacks, brown, impressed, and angulate, change this to 10%)
- A dose of powdered vitamins each meal, and a dose of calcium supplement every other meal.

A serving is about a fistful. I leave food in until it starts to 'turn'. When it starts to smell or discolor, it goes. Dried foods stay until the next serving.

Baby turtles eat daily. Young turtles every other day and adults every 3 days.

It depends on the nutritional needs of the type of tortoise, but I'll tell you what I feed mine...
I have box turtles, and they get any of the following: corn on the cob, dark greens, carrots, squashes, pumpkin, apples, melons, grapes, all berries, peaches, plums, earthworms, mealworms, crickets, other live food. DO NOT feed them iceberg lettuce. Also, sometimes broccoli and cauliflower can be an issue as well. A varied diet is key. Would you want to eat the same thing over and over?

hope that helps...

Tortoises are vegetarians, and need a good diet made up of a variety of nutritious foods. Iceberg lettuce is commonly fed, but it is the worst possible food. Kale, spinach, and dark green leafy veggies are good, and should make up the bulk of their diet. Carrots, squash, avocado, and many fruits are also added. Grazing on unsprayed lawns, feeding good quality hay, and some pelleted food for rabbits can also be added. Prepared chow, found at most pet shops, can be given, but should not be the only food given. You can find alot more info on feeding your pet at www.kingsnake.com

my sister also have one. for my opinion, i suggest to you that they can eat carrots, spinach, and any other kind of vegetables.
but you must slice them into pieces.eventually, they eat the specialized food for them.even though, you can still feed them with bread but remember you must tear them into pieces.ok
so gud luck.....
