I'm a nurse, in labor and delivery. I really want to get a nose piercing, and have recently discovered that my hospital has no policy against facial piercings.
So what I want to know, is is this completely unprofessional? Keep in my my average patient population is young, 13-35 on average. What would you think if you or your partner came to the hospital to have a baby and yoru nurse had a nose piercing? I'm just talking about a little silver dot, not a huge bull ring or anything like that.
Thank you!

Im just getting back in the job market after 4 months away from management and let me say that before at my co. I was always fighting for the acceptance of small peircings and small non offensive tattoos showing but its a hard battle with people accepting over the age of 40. I think of it as just a trend for the times right now and that its fine but as I'm going thru job interviews I forgot to take an old peircing of mine out and my interviewer asked me if I was hired would I have a problem not wearing my tongue ring or wearing clear jewelry I repsonded not a problem but I seriously think that after that , she didnt like me and thats why I havent been called back and everything was going fine till then ,I think I kaughed at something and opened my mouth to wide, but anyways Im getting away from my answer. I think a small nose peircing should be fine. I wouldnt be bothered by it. Go for it life is short!

Me personally, I feel a small nose piercing on a woman is sexy. However, in the business world, many employers would probably frown upon that and view it as being excessive. I have my left ear pierced, but many find it inappropriate for a businessman to wear an earring. I actually had my nose pierced at one point (in my younger days), but I would never have worn it during business operations. If it were acceptable, women would definitely be able to get away with it more than men.

Most hospitals have that same policy. However all the nurses and RT's Ive known that have had them done put band aids over the site until it healed and they were able to take it out while at work. The facility I worked in also had that same policy I'm a Clinical Psychologist and in my field I'd view it as very unprofessional but it is a personal choice, just like a tattoo is.

I personally think nose rings look cute if they are the right size. I would not look atyou any different as long as you were doing your job. If your hospital has a big problem with it after the healing time you could always get a clean spacer to keep it open. I use to work in jewlery and lots of teenagers were getting the spacers to wear to school. Good luck!

I think a small nose piercing would be fine. I think that multiple face piercings might make some people uncomfortable, but just a small one would be ok. I bet lots of your patients have them or tattoos, etc.

I worked in a hospital with a nose stud. I never felt like I was judged because of it. I was surprised when elderly women would compliment me on it. I think it actually helped some patients see that I was human, and get passed that fear of hospitals.

I would certainly ask before doing it. And yes, your employer CAN have restrictions regarding your appearance (prev post).
I always think of as nurses as to be so clean, neat and professional and I dont think a tiny little nose peircing would be unprofessional.

I don't want to offend or sound judgemental in anyway...but in a profession such as yours I do agree that it is inappropriate to have facial piercings. I personally don't mind them (as long as they aren't too out-there) but you need to appear mature and competent in difficult situations and there are a lot of people who won't take you that way if you have a diamond sticking out your nose :) I am a 23 year old mom with two kids and I had a very rough pregnancy (second time around) and needed a lot of reassurance in the hospital to know that everything was going to be OK and I think that the mature appearing nurses did help that a lot.

I think a tiny stud is perfectly acceptable. The septum piercing with a bull ring would be over the top.
