Ther boiler has heated up once very slowly since the problem began, but does not do so anymore. It was suggested that a powerflush was needed due to a build up of sludge (limescale, etc), so we asked a plumber to do one, but he said it couldnt be done. However, I suspect he wanted the bigger and better paid job of fitting a new boiler, which we would consider, but the boiler seems to ignite and heat up fine.

Sounds like new pump could be dodgey or it could be that the when the pump was fitted the water level has dropped. Call back whoever fitted the pump and get them to check it. You might have a look on the www as well.

If the boiler cuts out and then shows a lockout light usally a red push button then it is a fault with the boiler cycle.
If it just runs for a bit then cuts out with no lockout light then it is a heating system fault either the pump, thermostate, pressure switch, 3 port valve or lack of water in the system.

step 1 would be to run the boiler to see if it cuts out on lockout or high temp if the boiler has a pressure gauge on it this should be at least 1bar there will be a topup valve near the cold water inlet.

The guy who says a powerflush isnt possible is talking rubbish !!!You need to call out a proper engineer who knows what he's talking about - try looking on CORGI website or registered engineers. It may be something as simple as an airlock in the pump. It could be any number of things but call an expert to diagnose it as you could end up making things worse by playing guessing games. Check the pressure in the boiler which should be filled to 1.5bar with the boiler off/cold. xx

The first question is --Is the brand new pump running, can you feel it. If it is it should be removing the hot water from the boiler, this seems to not be the case as the boiler is heating up and cutting out on its thermostat. Do you have any motorised valves? are they opening??

I had the same problem last winter and has a new pump fitted but it turned out to be the because of the "flow switch", it may need replacing or hopefully just cleaning. Worth having a look at.

have you fitted the pump the right way around. There should be an arrow on the pump body showing the direction of the flow.
