I am writing a book called Hoofbeats, about a princess who is in love with a peasant blah blah blah. She resigns from her reign of Royalty to marry the peasant and to escape her abusive father, the king. So anyways, she goes to the peasants house and stays there overnight, her mom (also the queen) comes to the peasants house and is beaten up, says it is from the king.

Then the queen gets into an accident riding her horse, everyone is fine, but the horse is mysteriously changed into a unicorn, so the king, queen, princess and peasant take horse to vet of the village, and the vet puts this stuff on the horses horn that hides it from"unworthy" people, like people the unicorn doesn't like, and the king cannot see it, so he threatens to kill the unicorn b/c it doesn't like him yadda yadda yadda.

So in order to save the unicorn and themselves, the peasant and the princess run off, get lost in woods, beaten up by horse bandits, etc etc.

What do you guys think? Let me know please!!!

This is real fantasy. I can't imagine a king physically beating his daughter (whom he can marry off in a really good political marriage) or his queen (who probably came from a good political marriage). If Louis XVI had beat Marie Antoinette, his wife's family would have had him for lunch. Other types of cruelty, yes, but not physical.

All that aside, I'll still tell you to sit down and write it. The hardest part for a beginning writer is to write that first book. If you get this one done, you'll be closer to becoming a real writer. This one will probably not get published, but my first one didn't either. I can't even read it again because it is SOOOO bad.

Have fun with this one. Enjoy the story. Tell the whole story. When you get it done, let it sit for a while. You can write another one.

Try reading "Characters & Viewpoint" by Orson Scott Card and "Dialogue" by Lewis Turco. Both are excellent books for writers.

Have fun.

I think you should continue. You'll have a great time writing the book and will learn a lot about the writing process.

I don't know if you are writing this simply for your own satisfaction or for possible publication. You should be aware, however, that the vast majority of books that are written never make it into print. The books that are published are selected on the basis of what is going to sell. Fantasy is a small market, and not of a lot of new books are published in this niche each year. Having a good story is part of it, but you also must have intriguing characters, entertaining dialogue, and a crisp, clear but interesting writing style.

Good luck.

It just seems like a mesh of fairy tails all together. Also the whole thing about hiding the unicorns horn... Sounds like that movie The Last Unicorn. In that movie only "worthy" people could see the unicorns horn too, magic people or what ever. Also sounds a bit like that other movie Legend.

I doubt this would sell on the adult market but it might do well in the kids' fantasy genre (kinda like Harry Potter).

Maybe you can submit it as a screenplay for a possible cartoon. It reminds me of those old "My Little Pony" cartoons of the 80s.

I'm not very sure that I got the plot but if it is a fantasy book for adults you should put more adventures (fight witha dragon perhaps), and if it's for children make the king not so cruel. It is lots of cruelty in this world and children don't need it in books

You should think about posting it on line.
I am also writing a story.
Go to freewebs.com and set up a fee account and post your story. I'll look at it and tell you what I think.
The story sounds good but I'd like to see details and writing style before I judge it.

PS... you could look at mine too if you want.
