If you speaking about online, you can at our library. If you're speaking about f2f (verbal) it's cause it disturbs people reading, studying or researching.

One group talking wouldn't be a problem, but if one group gets to, then every one else demands the same right...next thing you know, it sounds like the trading floor of the NYSE.

Well, Chatting - as in speaking - obviously disturbs the quiet of the library.

Chatting online is inconsiderate because libraries have limited computers with internet access for use by those who need to do research. If one spends time chatting on a computer it will be wasting the limited computer resources and people who have assignments and important research to do are kept waiting for no good reason.

The library is the one place people who do not have internet access at home can go to get their research done for free. Also, libraries try to maintain a no-nonsense sort of atmosphere in which people can get serious work done. If you want to use the internet for recreation it is best go to an internet cafe and pay for the service.

Because I will come and tell you off. You are disturbing other people who are trying to use the library to study. Go to Starbucks to chat. Use the Lending Library then you can take the books home with you and make as much noise as you want!

By the way, it is also illegal to eat a tin of tuna with your fingers in a library (I had to tell a lady to stop doing that once, too) But at least she was doing it quietly.....!

Because others are reading and studying and any talking
will reduce their concentration. Silence in a Library is normal
and adopted in all countries.

people need to get their work done. if there is a distraction like someone talking, they will get sidetracked and distracted. its important for them to get their work done. f their work wasn't that important, they would probably have done it somewhere else. people go to the library to do their work/reading/homework/etc in peace and quiet. dont ruin it for everyone there. there arent many queit places to go now. besides the dusty old book smell, old people coughing, and little kids whining that its no fun to their parents, the library is a great place to study, do your work, or even just surf the web and think. so SHHH! please

you're expected to use their computers for quick research and leave so others can have a turn. Chatting can often go on for hours and it not really productive.

Because people are reading and studying, and too much noise would be distracting. Whispering would be OK.
