I think it's all to do with the wealth and lifestyle of todays young generation. I was born in the 70's and we didn't have many choices and priviledges. Another generation back (50's) they even had less. Less of everything, food, clothes, toys, money etc. Today's kids are far too spoilt for choices and they have far too many possessions that they don't value because if it gets broken or lost, the parents will replace it immediately. We live in a throw-away society, which makes people have very little respect for their OWN posession not to mention OTHER people's possessions. Today's kids think that because food is relatively cheap and aplenty, they've got the right to be fussy about what they eat. If something is not fatty and sugary they disrespect the people who have been slaving over that dinner for them to eat. Parenting is getting more and more restricted with a ban on smacking and teachers have virtually been stripped of all disciplining power that they did have long time ago. Now the teachers get blamed for holding a 'boring' lesson by inspectors. What's the world coming to? Far too much tolerance will lead to the break up of society and people lose respect for those who tolerate their every little whim.

I think the problem with younger generation is that they are bored,so being rude and showing no respect for others springs from that. Plus there is no discipline in the schools or from what i can see in the home , so who is to blame, parents, schools, society all 3. I think older people will always see the younger generation as unrespectfull, because the generations always change..

I agree 150% We never dared to speak to another adult let alone teacher in the manner to which kids these days get away with doing. Personally I believe it started when the took the Pledge of allegiance and prayer out of school and social services went over board with there family interference . If they are actually abused fine but , kids use this as a threat and leverage and I for one won't stand for a child disrespecting an adult of any age, race , etc. Iam 38 and I still believe in saying thank you , yes mam no sir and showing due respect to those around me.

It depends. In my country the younger generation have great respect for older people. We still kiss the hands of old people, relatives or not to show our respect. We treat our parents with love and kindness. Give respect where respect is due. It depends on the breeding and the upbringing of the young ones. I am a filipina and that is our culture. It will be like that as this trait is passed on to every generation.

Yes the younger generation lack respect for people, but we can't blame no one but ourselves, things like given into perverse ways is the cause, giving in a little till were at the point its okay to have 16 year olds showing a little cleavage in Nickelodeon TV shows.
Back then TV shows would not show a married couple sleeping in the same bed. Go fig!

There is definitely a difference in the kids of today. I look at my own nephews as example. They act in ways we as kids would never even think about. I would never have talked back to my mother or grandmother, not only out of fear of getting my butt beat with the infamous "switch" that you had to go and break off the tree yourself, but also just from a matter of respect we didn't yell and act out. I get on them all the time about their behavior and it makes me so angry. There is just no respect for adults or for themselves. My ten year old nephew was just given in school suspension for talking back to his teacher and refusing to go to the office. I believe they lack respect for people in general...young or old. What a pitty. To think; they are the future of this nation........pretty scary thought. To be fair though, there are some good kids too .

Younger kids are taught by parents today that they don't have to do anything they don't want to. They do not respect elders or people. If a chid was born after 1974, the parents of that generation was brought up by lots of negativity. Example prejudice, I am better than the next, no encouragement

I am a young person of 23 and i have respect for all people, regardless of colour, creed, age or sex.
I think that SOME young people don't have any respect for themselves so invariably they won't have any respect for anyone else, young or old.
Also you must remember that young people are the group most likely to be the VICTIM of crimes.
There are plenty of good, socially aware well behaved youngsters out there, but you don't often hear about the good eggs in the press.
And plenty of older people are disrespectful to young people so it works both ways.

Its just respect generally, everyone brought up to be selfish parents giving there kids whatever they want as they guilty for working all the time and palming kids off to grandparents/childminders.
Just look at all these kids not eating healthy school dinners, the stories of mums bringing burgers and chips and putting through the railings - what has the world come too!!
Its parents fault it has feck all to do with society, no discipline.
