On The Contrary to other answers here,,Your water jackets are made to flow properly if the freeze plug is left in the water jacket It could divert the flow pattern, possibly causing poor cylinder head cooling etc. and you know where that could head too..use a magnet to bring it to the opening Grip it with a pair of vise grips and just pry it out the hole,, if its in a really bad position you can position a bar to pry it out .....they come right out ... I have never lost one in an engine theres not that much room for it to go too.. I hope this helps you... Good Luck
To the other guys that said leave it in...If it were yours,, Would you leave it ?????

You just force it out but dont worry there is very little chance of it doing any damage if you leave it there...the whole water jacket is filled with water and the block inlets are usually on the top of the block so little chance of it floating...

Sometimes all you can do is leave it in there. As long as it is not in a direct line to the pump you are okay. If you can get at it with a needle nose pliers then you can usually get a vise grip on it and mangle it enough to get it back through the hole.

Don't worry about it.Seriously it's not going to hurt the engine. It's going to stay in the water jacket and ,well lay there.
