Generally - if you only have the one poem, the best place to approach as a starting point is magazines and online publications. There are plenty of poetry based magazines and E-Zines around, and lots run competitions for poets to enter.
If you have an anthology of poetry, then the general route nowadays is to dicover an agent who will work with you. You can find a list of reputable agents in the Writers Handbook. A point to take in - if any agent asks you for any money - they are unlikely to be proper agents. Trust me.
The agent will then promote your work to publishers.
Be aware, it is extremely hard to get published - and if you don't succeed, it by no means means that you are rubbish. It is competitive out there.

I would recommend self-publishing. I self-published a book of poetry through http://www.lulu.com/ (you don’t need an agent for self-publishing)
Lulu is completely free and very easy to use. You can then buy a global distribution, or ISBN, which will put your book on Barnes and noble, borders, Amazon.... I really like lulu, I think they are great. They also offer a great customer service if you get stuck. Once published with them, you automatically get the copyright, and you keep all rights to it. You can have books printed in b/w or colour, hardback or soft back, and in a variety of sizes.
If you think they are too good to be true (which was my original opinion) you can view my book at http://www.lulu.com/dchooper
Hope this helps. Good luck with your writing.
For any more information about Lulu you can contact me at forensic_dreamer@hotmail.com (if you do contact me, put Lulu in the subject line, or I might report as Spam)
Cheers, Deanna.

as far as i know if you send the material off to a publisher you will receive a responce as to wether they will publish it. I beleive it works the same as books and that's what you do with them so I would try that.

Another way is to pay for publishing yourself and then send out copies of your book and sell, sell, sell until they've all gone!
