The author is saying that human beings have developed very quickly: from cave-dwelling, club-wielding hunter-gatherers to modern, technological, artistic beings, in a very short amount of evolutionary time, and that this bodes well for our species. The author gives Bach as an example of the high art which mankind has become capable of producing, in a relatively short time since the emergence of our species. To paraphrase, any species capable of developing this far, this fast, has some positive potential.

This sentence is applauding the rapid development of the human species.
To paraphrase.

In evolutionary terms, humans have existed only an instant, yet in this short time we have been able to
accomplish great things. This includes writing complex music
as is exemplified by the music of Bach, which is famous for its beauty and elegant complexity. Any species capable of creating something so beautiful and complex cannot be all bad.

this sentence sounds familiar. what is it from?

it refers to human beings as a species. that from an evolutionary view, we are so very young as a species. but yet being so young, we have produced a composer like bach, whose music is sublime. the fact that we have produced someone like bach, we can't be that bad as a species. the speaker is obviously not a human.

is this from terry pratchett or douglas adams? i know i have read this somewhere!

Classical music is an option for those forms of species in an embryotic stage, that is for those forms of species which have the function of reproduction.

I don't believe the sentence can be paraphrased. It's 2 different sentences. 2 different subjects, and 2 differnet points. They're both true though.
