i want to run the cold water straight from the mains but i live in a flat and the cold water to the bath/shower comes from the cold water tank in the loft but i cannot obtain permission from from landlord - he has suggested fixing a pump to the pipe from the cold water tank supply in order to boost the cold water flow to the shower. can this be done? i currently have to have the temperature on the combi boiler set to its minimum and only use the hot water tap in order to enjoy a relatively strong and pain free shower.

in response to the comment regarding the cold water storage tank - i live in an old building which was developed into flats. the cold water storage tanks are still in use. i am convinced that the cold water storage tank feeds cold water to my bath taps because the water pressure is so low compared to the hot water. if i don't use the cold water tap to shower then the pressure is higher than if i use the cold water tap and try to mix the hot and cold int the traditional way. i know its stupid - the cold should come directly off the mains but that is not the case for the bath/shower taps.

I've never heard of a combi boiler fed from a storage tank, do you have heating as well, how was it filled??

I can't understand why you have a cold water storage tank and a combi boiler. It is a bit of a contradiction of terms. Difficult to fix a pump effectively in this situation. The pressures need to be equal and this cannot be guaranteed with a pump. Your ideal is to feed the cold water from mains. Why would your landlord not let you do this, but is prepared to let you fit a pump. Seems very odd to me.

You can pump the cold supply from the tank but as I understood it you are not supposed to pump mains supply water. The only downside to pumping the water could be that it can be very noisy.
The cold water to your bathroom will be fed from the cold water storage tank - that is standard practise in most households. Only your boiler and kitchen tap will be fed from the mains and deemed potable water supply - or commonly known as drinking water. And yes - most households ARE brushing their teeth in smelly old tank water - thats why we fit lids !!!!!
